Join us at the Dickey Center at Dartmouth College for Leadership in Turbulent Times a conversation with General James Mattis, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.) and 26th Secretary of Defense. General Mattis is hosted by the Davidson Institute for Global Security at the Dickey Center and is the Center's Class of 1950 Senior Foreign Affairs Speaker. Over a 43-year Marine Corps Career, General Mattis led major operations in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and later served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation and head of U.S. Central Command. After retiring in 2013, he became the Hoover Institution’s Davies Family Distinguished Fellow, served as 26th Secretary of Defense from 2017 to 2019, and continues his work at the Hoover Institution today. The General will be in discussion with Victoria K. Holt, Norman E. McCulloch Jr. Director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding; and Daryl Press, Professor of Government and Faculty Director for the Davidson Institute for Global Security. General Mattis will draw on more than four decades in uniform--from commanding a 40-man infantry platoon to directing operations of over 250,000 personnel across the Middle East--as well as service as the Secretary of Defense. The conversation will explore the importance of leadership at all levels, while assessing the current state of foreign affairs.
