Embrace your creativity in the inspiring setting of the historic John Hay Estate this summer. Join us each Tuesday in July for intimate writing workshops led by distinguished instructors, where the spectacular lake views and lush gardens become your muse. MAKE A SCENE! (Or Risk Boring Your Readers) Scenes are the lifeblood of both fiction and narrative nonfiction. They are the building blocks of our stories, the "units" that dramatize key moments, and make readers feel and care. In this interactive workshop you'll learn the key components of effective scenic writing. We'll workshop examples from participants’ work so please bring in 250 words to share aloud. If time allows, we'll also write from a prompt to further exemplify core concepts. Whether you're a newbie or seasoned author, expect lots of insights that will enliven both your writing process and your prose! Please leave all self doubts at the door. Joni B. Cole is the author of seven books, including the acclaimed essay collection Party Like It’s 2044: Finding the Funny in Life and Death ("Fabulously readable and thoroughly engaging") and the writing guide: Good Naked: How to Write More, Write Better, and Be Happier (listed as one of the “Best Books for Writers” by Poets & Writersmagazine). She is also the author of the popular guide Toxic Feedback: Helping Writers Survive and Thrive. For twenty-five years she has taught creative writing to adults online and in person at her own writer's center and at a variety of academic programs and community organizations. Joni lives in Vermont and is currently under contract for her third collection of personal essays. Meets in the Main House. Fells Members and NH Writers Project Members: $30, Non-members: $40. Advance registration is requested. This event is made possible by a generous donation from the New Hampshire Writers’ Project.
