Brinnae Bent is a faculty member and engineer at Duke University, where she directs the TRUST Lab and leads initiatives to make AI systems more explainable, ethical, and accessible. She has built machine learning algorithms for some of the world's largest companies and developed tools with real-world medical applications — from helping people walk to monitoring glucose noninvasively. In her lecture, Dr. Bent uses an unexpected starting point — the Declaration of Independence — to explain how AI systems actually work, why they have the limitations they do, and what timeless questions about truth and legitimacy mean in an age of machine intelligence. No technical background required; this talk is designed for everyone. Cost: We thank Merrill-Lynch Wealth Management for their support of this session.
