The owner and founder of The Fourth Place, Ian Struckhoff of Enfield, a graduate of Hanover High School and the University of St Andrews in Scotland, spent his earlier career as a software service executive. He conceived The Fourth Place out of his love of games, graphic novels, comics, the camaraderie he experienced beginning with his first roleplaying game as a teenager, and the need he saw for more spaces where everyone can enjoy their hobbies together and feel at home. Ian chose Hanover Park, owned by Jim and Susan Rubens, for its beautiful design and central location.
Hanover Park was developed specifically as a place for retailers to thrive. Jim Ruben says, “Since 1990, downtown Hanover retail has been challenged by big-box stores, the internet, and market preference for services and experiential products. I am excited by the multiple new retail concepts that have come to downtown Hanover. The Fourth Place adds to this trend, and Susan and I welcome Ian and his geek community to Hanover Park!” Local architects Studio Nexus of White River Junction, VT and general contractors Estes & Gallup Inc. of Lyme, NH are partners in finalizing the designs, plans, and schedules for The Fourth Place to open in early to mid-September. Tim Estes, of Estes & Gallup established in 1972, will be providing preconstruction and construction phase services for The Fourth Place. Tim says, “Estes & Gallup are proud to be a member of this new retail and gathering space in Hanover, and we are looking forward to the start of construction and the successful completion of the work over the next couple of months. Jim Wasser and Breanna Gillam from Studio Nexus are working on architecture, design, and permitting for the space. Jim is the founding partner with 35 years of design experience and a focus on customer working relationships while Breanna leads the Press Release – Immediate Release interior design department. They said, “Working with Ian has been a unique, creative, and satisfying experience. Ian has been the model client—engaged, well-studied and enthusiastic. We wish him the best of luck on this adventure.” For the latest news from The Fourth Place, more details about the opening, and a chance to give input into the future of the space, join The Fourth Place mailing list and their online community! A third place is a sociological term for the place after home and work where someone feels comfortable and at home. In decades past, a third place might have been an arcade, bowling alley, or hair salon. The most famous third place is “where everyone knows your name”— the famous bar Cheers— and others from popular media include Central Perk on Friends, nightclub The Bronze from Buffy, and Ten Forward from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Fourth Place takes its name from the sense of belonging we get from a “third place” and some other geeky concepts that are close to Ian’s heart: • Jack Kirby's cosmic comic books about space gods from the Fourth World • Faerie as the Fourth realm of storybooks, after Earth, Heaven, and Hell • The kind of gaming group where you still have a blast when you get fourth place. Ian Struckhoff found his first "third places"— spaces where a person feels at home, aside from home or work— in Hanover High School’s art room, and at Howe Library where he worked as a page in the 1990s. On July 14 and August 11, Ian will return to Howe Library to host Free Board Game Nights from 5:00 to 9:00 pm in the Mayer Room of Howe Library. The mission of The Fourth Place is to create spaces where people feel at home sharing hobbies and passions, and where everyone is welcome. That includes an online community, pop-up gaming events, and the upcoming Hanover, NH location. The Fourth Place was founded in 2018 and became a limited liability company in 2021.
