Business Manager The Mountain School, Vershire, Vermont Beginning July 2022 The Business Manager will assume responsibility for organizing the school’s finances, building the budget, paying the school’s bills, and keeping the books. Reporting to the director, this leader will also communicate closely with Milton Academy, ensuring proper reporting and financial disclosures. Responsibilities: Build and maintain the budget; Prepare a variety of financial statements; Communicate with Milton Academy employees in HR and financial management; Collaborate closely with the director and administrative team on issues related to financial health; Enter gifts into FileMaker and support the work of donor acknowledgment; Know and appreciate the current students and faculty, participating in some meetings and work periods. Qualifications: Five or more years experience working in a field related to business management, accounting, or school finances; Excellent organizational skills; Strong communication skills; Enthusiasm for collaborating with colleagues and connecting with teenagers; A commitment to diversity of all kinds. In order for this position to be benefits-eligible or full-time, the employee will also need to undertake other roles for the school. These could include: Human resources support, reporting dually to the Mountain School director and the Chief Human Resources Officer at Milton Academy Oversight of the Mountain School’s technological infrastructure Communications and development support Other on-campus duties such as dorm support, weekend duty, and participation in the outdoor and work programs Compensation starts at $50,000 and is commensurate with experience. Full-time positions include generous medical and retirement benefits. There is no on-campus housing associated with this position, though there is a housing stipend. All faculty are welcome to enjoy chef-prepared, farm-fresh meals in our dining hall seven days a week. With an annual budget of 3.5 million dollars and an endowment of 11.5 million dollars, the school holds no debt and very little deferred maintenance. More than three-quarters of the budget supports people in the form of faculty salaries and benefits and need-based scholarships for students. Keeping the Mountain School books requires diligent monthly reporting, including communication with the Mountain School director and the Milton Academy Comptroller. Relationship with Milton Academy Owned by Milton Academy, the Mountain School generates its own revenue and acts with autonomy in day-to-day operations. The business manager communicates with members of Milton Academy’s administration about issues related to financial management, HR reporting, capital projects, and cash flow. In addition, a small oversight committee visits the campus twice annually to meet and report directly to Milton Academy’s Head of School. The director, business manager, and Head of School also make personal visits between the campuses. Some Challenges and Opportunities for the Future The Mountain School is committed to making its financial procedures more organized transparent, and sustainable. The business manager, while working with considerable autonomy, will continue the Mountain School’s work of aligning financial and reporting practices with Milton Academy.
